Bagelton, The Kingdom of Bagelton (Formal), or the Greater Bajel Metropolitan Area (Rarely), is a large country in western Fridgia populated by bagels and doughnuts. Despite it's tremendous population, Bagelton is technically a city-state, due to it's 100% urbanization aside from the Bageltundra national park.
The current rulers of Bagelton are King Do-Nut VI (Ceremonial Head of State) and Lord Mayor Grainson (Head of Government). Bagelton's government is a democratically-elected "city council", where each Megadistrict elects 2 representatives. There are a total of 1440 representatives. Important Bagel figures include King Cremchez, who oversaw the signing of the Treaty of Bagelstad, King Löp, who issued a Royal Decree to allow universal bagel suffrage, Mayor Sylta, who founded the Bageltundra National Park through the Environmental Protection Act of 200 MA, and Private Sven Bagelson, the kingdom's most famous war hero and only ever battle death (disputed).
In around 320 BMA, several towns and city-states developed around the Bagel Circulatory River. The most powerful of these was Bajel, which started rapidly expanding. Soon, Bajel grew so large that it encompassed several other major cities, and under King Cremchez, they were unified through the Treaty of Bagelstad. To make sure each city was represented, the kings of each minor town became members of the city council, making Bagelton effectively the first representative democracy in Fridgia, as many towns had elected kings and many did shortly after the Treaty of Bagelstad (314 BMA).
In around 20 BMA, council member elections were standardized: Instead of each Megadistrict choosing how to pick their representatives, they had to have a vote between the upper- and upper-middle- class citizens. In 165 MA, only a few years after the Nutch Uprising and outbreak of the Pankastian Civil War, protests erupted in Bagelton demanding the right to vote for lower-middle- and lower- class citizens. The protests were successful, as the government wanted to avoid an upscaled version of the Nutch Uprising.
The industrial revloution came to Bagelton in 177 MA. City growth rose exponentially, with production increasing tenfold. There was so much supply and demand for metals such as steel that the government had to nationalize the mining companies. Eventually, the megalopolis grew so much that environmentalists such as Bajel mayor Sylta were worried about urbanizing all land on the island until there was nothing left, and the Bageltundra National Park was created through the Environmental Protection Act of Two Hundred Modern Age (EPA200).
In 275 MA, two years after the start of the Panko-Relish War, Bagleton joined the Coalition Against the Relish Peninsula (CARP), along with Pankaco, Nutland, Berryland, and the Citrus Kingdom. Most countries claim that the death of Private Sven Bagelson during Battle of Moosehead Inn was the first Bagel casualty in war, however, Bajel claims that that incident was merely an "armed bar fight," not a proper battle. However, Private Sven Bagelson day is a national holiday, marked on his birthday. day. After Berryland later criticized Pankaco for their continuous occupation of Henia, MZ, Bagelton chose to remain neutral in the resulting First Panko-Berry War.
In 308 MA, the council signed an economic union with Nutland, Pankaco, Pastia, and Liechtenpie, unifying their currencies. When the Freezer War began shortly after, the King chose to officially remain neutral, although public opinion was heavily on the side of SHARKFIN. After the freezer war ended with a "cold" bang, Bagelton intended to remain neutral in the ensuing Great War, but, pressure form it's Nutch allies dragged it into the fight. No troops actually saw combat; the Bagel Air Supremcay Guild (BASG) chose to instead participate by destroying SORP infrastructure with spasmodic blasts from the Long-Ranged HyperSonic Plasms Mega-Cannon (LRHSPMC), a WMD secretly recovered from the remains of Yolky's floaating fortress. The bagel people threw one of the largest parties the world had ever seen at the en`d of the war, having one decisively with no casualties (Bar the occaisonal officer stubbing their toe).
The bagel government has little respect for sites of historical significance. In 332 MA, this led to a split in the Bagelton Historical Society, resulting in the creation of the Society for the Preservation of Historical Artifacts and Buildings of Bagelton (SPHABB), which is more like a terrorist group than a historical society. Because of this, the bagel public has very little respect for the BHS, despite it being an entirely separate entity who protest peacefully. This results in bulldozers needing tank escorts when tearing down a building more than 20 years old.
Due to Bagelton's vast population of 10 billion, around two-thirds of the entire population of Fridgia, they have an extremely high GDP of $1.4 quadrillion. Although their GDP is staggering, per capita they only have the fifth highest, with $141k. Their enormous population also leads to an overwhelming military of 10M personnel - more than double every other armed forces combined. The military's only known weakness is experience - or lack thereof. The only troops to see combat were the belligerents of the Battle of Moosehead Inn - which was almost 100 years ago - and any troops who were near a SPHABB attack.
Bagelton's huge population Is mostly driven by large-scale farming in the east of the country, much of which is now hydroponic. Their economy is driven mostly by service, but with a significant portion of exports of Giant Blocks of Metal - Geologists believe that a megacolossal eruption of the now-extinct Mt. Booston Supervolcano led to the continent's richness is such resources.
